Chattanooga Composite Squadron Participates in Community Safety Day

May 16, 2009

The Chattanooga Composite Squadron was invited to participate in the East Chattanooga Weed and Seed Community Safety Day by delivering the Drug Demand Reduction message.

This event highlighted the importance of community safety with demonstrations in drug awareness, fire safety, home security, police citizen’s academy and fingerprint and photo identification for children and the elderly.

The drug awareness message was presented with a “twist”: armed with the board game Twister and the Fatal Vision Goggles, many participants readily volunteered to participate wanting to know more about the impairing affects on their vision (Fatal Vision Goggles accurately mimic the affects of alcohol and narcotics without the participant being intoxicated).

Even local law enforcement officers were curious about the Fatal Vision Goggles, as it allowed them to experience the debilitating affects of narcotics on our citizens, an experience they encounter all too often while on patrol. On this day, the officers could “see” firsthand through the eyes of someone so impaired.

The Weed and Seed program helps communities that are in distress by "weeding" out problems such as crime, gangs and drugs, while "seeding" growth and development. The grant program helps sites through funding, but also through establishing and supporting relationships with entities that can bring about change in Weed and Seed communities. Through strong relationships with residents, local law enforcement, local and federal government, area businesses and churches, East Chattanooga Weed and Seed provides services and programs to the residents such as our Community Safety Day, Grass Roots Health Fair, the Day of Service, computer classes and numerous youth activities.
